Nancy's workshops are a great way to get familiar with using Golden's products. It was, to date, one of the best workshops I've ever taken!

SUSAN KLEBANOFF

"Changing Space" collection: Museum of Modern Art, Nagoya, Japan
Susan Klebanoff, a weaver who creates 3 dimensional tapestries, was selected to
be amongst the American artists in the inauguration the first American gallery in
Moscow. She was also one of two American artists invited to the World Design
Expo in Nagoya, Japan. Klebanoff's works graces galleries and lobbies in
consulates, embassies, public and private collections around the world. Susan
lives in Albuquerque, NM.

SHIRA GREENBERG

Shira Greenberg is the founder and executive director of the Keshet DanceCompany (KDC) located in Albuquerque, NM. Shira will be speaking about
Keshet. Founded in 1996, Keshet’s mission is to inspire passion and open
unlimited possibilities through the experience of dance by uniting professional
dancers with the community. Keshet's professional dancers work with the
community as instructors and mentors to provide young artists with guidance
along a professional career path, increase youth health and self-esteem, provide
a strong base of positive mentorship for homeless and incarcerated youth and
demolish misconceptions about individuals with physical disabilities. Since its
inception, KDC has presented over 50 productions, and impacted the lives of
over 50,000 children and adults.

I think it means a lot. So many fellow artists complain about social media and their annoyance with it-wishing that it would go away. But, we are social creatures, and social media is rich with, well, social things. So, it is doubtful that it will go away anytime too soon. This article is reprinted with permission by the author who wrote it for Arts Blog:

David Armano of the Harvard Business Review recently published six 2012 predictions for social media.

Although he made some inaccurate predictions about 2011, here is what he is suggesting for 2012 (with links added by me):
“Convergence Emergence. For a glimpse into how social will further integrate with “real life,” we can look at what Coca Cola experimented with all the way back in 2010. Coke created an amusement park where participants could “swipe” their RFID-equipped wristbands at kiosks, which posted to their Facebook account what they were doing and where. Also, as part of a marketing campaign, Domino’s Pizza posted feedback — unfiltered feedback — on a large billboard in Times Square, bringing together real opinions from real people pulled from a digital source and displayed in the real world. These types of “trans-media” experiences are likely to define “social” in the year to come.

The Cult of Influence. In much the same way that Google has defined a system that rewards those who produce findable content, there is a race on to develop a system that will reward those who wield the most social influence. One particular player has emerged, Klout, determined to establish their platform as the authority of digital influence. Klout’s attempt to convert digital influence into business value underscores a much bigger movement which we’ll continue to see play out in the next year. To some degree everyone now has some digital influence (not just celebrities, academics, policy makers or those who sway public opinion). But for the next year, the cult of influence becomes less about consumer plays like Klout and more about the tools and techniques professionals use to “score” digital influence and actually harness, scale, and measure the results of it.

Gamification Nation. No we’re not taking about video games. Rather, game-like qualities are emerging within a number of social apps in your browser or mobile device. From levels, to leaderboards, to badges or points, rewards for participation abound. It’s likely that the trend will have to evolve given how competition for our time and attention this gaming creates. Primarily, gamification has been used in consumer settings, but look for it in other areas from HR, to government, healthcare, and even business management. Perhaps negotiating your next raise will be tied to your position on the company’s digital leaderboard.

Social Sharing. Ideas, opinions, media, status updates are all part of what makes social media a powerful and often disruptive force. The media industry was one of the first to understand this, adding sharing options to content, which led to more page views and better status in search results. What comes next in social sharing is more closely aligned with e-commerce or web transactions. For example, Sears allows a user to share a product or review with their networks directly from the site. Sharing that vacation you just booked, or recommending a product, or service from any site to a social network is where sharing goes next. We probably don’t know what we are willing to share until we see the option to do it.
Social Television. For many of us, watching television is already a social act, whether it’s talking to the person next to you, or texting, tweeting, and calling friends about what you’re watching. But television is about to become a social experience in a bigger and broader sense. The X Factor now allows voting via Twitter and highlights other social promotions, which encourages viewers to tap social networks while they watch. Another way media consumption is becoming social comes from a network called Get Glue which acts as something of a Foursquare for media. Participants can “check-in” to their favorite shows (or other forms of media) and collect stickers to tell the world what programs they love. Watch for more of this this year as ratings rise for socially integrated shows.

The Micro Economy. Lastly as we roll into 2012, watch for a more social approach to solving business problems through a sort of micro-economy. Kickstarter gives anyone with a project, the opportunity to get that initiative funded by those who choose to (and patrons receive something in return). A crowdsourcing platform for would be inventors called Quirky lets the best product ideas rise to the top and then helps them get produced and sold while the “inventor” takes a cut. Air BnB turns homes into hotels and travelers into guests, providing both parties with an opportunity to make and save money. These examples may point to a new future reality where economic value is directly negotiated and exchanged between individuals over institutions.”

Hahn Arroyo Water Quality Structure Project

The Albuquerque Metropolitan Arroyo Flood Control Authority and the City of Albuquerque Public Art Program seek preliminary ideas by local metalworkers to adorn the newly installed Water Quality Structure in the Hahn Arroyo. The Art Selection Committee anticipates proposals that acknowledge the intent of the Hahn Arroyo Renovation and may address the natural surroundings of the site. Metalwork craftsmanship and the artist's consideration of existing artwork and landscape design themes have been identified as desirable proposal elements. The selected artist or artist team will be given $20,000 to design and implement this project.

The deadline for submissions is Friday, February 10, 2012 at 5:00 p.m.

Attend the City Hall Public Art Open House

The City of Albuquerque's and Bernalillo County's Public Art Programs are pleased to invite the public to a special viewing of the Public Art Collections at the City County Government Center, January 20, from 5 to 7 p.m.

The Public Art Open House will include relocated Sunport artworks; County Collection Committee, Real Deal and APS Metro Youth acquisitions; and a special reception for "El Otro Lado; The Other Side" a community art project created in partnership with The Academy for the Love of Learning and 516 Arts.

The Albuquerque Public Art Urban Enhancement Program will also release the much awaited 2012 Public Art Brochure, featuring maps and images of much of the collection throughout the entire city. Public Art trading cards will be given to kids and those "young at heart", and a preview screening of the latest Public Art Mini-Documentary entitled "Flyway" produced by Anthony DellaFlora and GOV-TV will be shown on the 7th Floor.

Light refreshments will be provided and local musicians will perform.

Visitors should enter City Hall from the 400 Marquette street entrance or the One Civic Plaza entrance. They will be given an art guide with a complete listing of all the artists and artworks in the building, as well as a special features map. This event is free, no reservations are required.

SOMETHING ABOUT SYLVIA...

I was born in Tucumcari and have lived most of my life in New Mexico. My
grandparents came here in 1900 (still Indian Territory) and homesteaded outside Tucumcari ranching (The Killgore Ranch). Everything about New Mexico influences my art, My most cherished dream was to be an artist, wife and mother, all of which I have
had. I met my husband at the University of New Mexico where I majored in
Business and minored in Art. I began drawing and coloring as a child, progressed to, palette-knife Oils,
watercolor, mixed media and beaded and polymer jewelry. Just 2 years ago, I
organized and with help from other members brought into being a
new Co-op Gallery, Galeria de Corrales, the 4th I have been a member of.
Besides painting, of which I have
completed and sold over 1000 pieces, I have taught oil and watercolor
classes since 1975, both private and
community college. I believe that no matter how accomplished you think you
are, you can always improve
by constantly evolving, trying new techniques and experimenting. Your work
will reflect this in many wonderful
ways.

Co-op Gallery Update

Hi Everyone,

I have been getting some response about my proposed co-op (more about that word in a bit) gallery specializing in works on / or of paper. Based on some questions I have been getting I think answers and explanations are in order.

First, the idea behind the gallery was to showcase and specialize works that use paper as a major component. This might and could include printmaking, photography, painting, three dimensional works (hanging or standing), collage, drawing, and artist books as well as work in which paper is mounted on canvas, or panel.

By concentrating on paper it is hoped that the gallery would set itself apart from other galleries, co-op or otherwise, thereby making it a destination for art buyers.

On the subject of membership; the gallery was never intended to be solely for RRAA members. It turns out that RRAA members were to first to hear about the idea because I had easy access to a communication tool. I have been trying to get the word out to other artists but have run into roadblocks in that regard. It is something I am trying to resolve.

Given the above problem I and since the holidays are fast approaching I am holding off on contacting any other artist groups until after the first of the year with an organizing meeting to take place in late February or early March. As to those who are interested and have contacted me I have saved your contact information and will contact you after the first of the year.

As to location, cost of membership, etc; though I have done some research in those areas they need to be determined by the members of the co-op.

Finally, as to my use of the word coop in place of co-op I apologize for any confusion it might have caused. I don’t know if its Northeastern, which is where I hail from, thing but I have heard and used co-op and coop used interchangeably.

I hope this post answers some questions.

October Meeting

The next meeting of the Rio Rancho Art Salon will be October 15 @ 10:00 AM though you are invited to come around 9:30 AM for coffee and goodies.

All artists, art educators, gallery people and non-artists who have an interest in art are invited to join in a lively discussions regarding art, issues that affect art, politics, science, share ideas on marketing or solutions on how to get over creative stumbling block. The topic for the next meeting will be on; "Truth and what how it applies to Art." Another possible topic is: "Can art be taught?"

RRAS will also be an opportunity to meet other artists and non-artists in a friendly relaxed atmosphere, exchange business cards and show invitations.

Please note that the RRAS is not affiliated with the Rio Rancho Art Association or any other art association. Also this not a business meeting of a group. Art demonstrations will not be a part of the RRAS gatherings.

ROBERT KUESTER Will Demo on October 10th

"I create paintings with strong and lasting artistic quality. I believe that a thing of beauty is a joy forever. My hope is that others will see and feel the beauty I have found or created in my subjects."

Robert Kuester is not a photo realist, but rather begins with the randomness of nature, subtly transforming it into a heightened state of beauty and permanence through organization and desig and the stamp of his personal sense of beauty. This process remains his motivation to be a painter.

As an Alla Prima painter kuester loves the beauty in brushwork, exploiting it for its own sake while the image manifests as a believable representation of his subject. Kuester also believes in the experience of Plein Air painting for developing a real depth of understanding regarding landscape.

Robert Kuester's art education began in earnest with two years at Drake University in Iowa, then a transfer to The Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles to obtain a BFA. In 1986, Robert left a successful career in illustration in Detroit and moved to New Mexico. He studied with painters such as Ovanes Berberian, Michael Lynch, Irby Brown, and others have helped. Robert Kuester developed the mastery he now displays.

Robert will demo for us after the business meeting on October 10th. The meeting begins at 6:30pm at Destiny Center, 4401 Northern Blvd, NE, Rio Rancho, NM. Refreshments will be served. The public is welcome!!!

A number of artists have asked me to teach a three day oil/pastel portrait workshop before the end of the year. Therefore, I am planning to conduct a workshop on 16, 17 and 18 September (9AM-4PM). The cost is $190 plus a $36 dollar model fee. You will work with a live model all three days.

Classes will be at the Artist Studio (Hoffmantown Shopping Center - Wyoming and Menaul).

There will be ample demonstrations, exercises, work and fun. If you are interested please e-mail me ASAP because class size is limited and admission is on a first come basis. I think you will find immersing yourself in three days of painting people morning and afternoon will push you to a new level and get your creative juices flowing. Hope to see you.

MING FRANZ will demo SPLASH INK WITH WATERCOLOR

Ming Franz will demo for us at our next membership meeting on Monday, Sept. 12th. Ming's artwork is loose and free, and delightful to look at! It is called SPLASH INK WITH WATERCOLOR...the public is welcomed to join us...We meet at the Destiny Center in Rio Rancho...4401 Northern Blvd. NE...the meeting begins at 6:30 with the demo following.

Ming was born in the jungle region of Taiwan. It was during her hikes to school as a child that she developed a great love for nature. This love is reflected in her artwork. Painting landscapes comes natural for her. Ming says her art is about finding the inner spirit and letting it work for and through the viewer.

Aloha Oe to Russell Sabin

A longstanding member of RRAA, Russell Sabin is moving to San Diego. He leaves on Sunday, July 31. There is still time to go see him and say goodbye! He is moving to San Diego (Carlsbad) to an assisted living facility that is just one mile from one of his sons. I think Russell is looking forward to the change, the move and to be in a different climate. Carlsbad is a beautiful area and it is right on the coast, so Russell will be able to enjoy the beach.

Macular degeneration has caught up to him, so he had to stop painting about a year ago-I know he misses doing that as he used to paint one painting a week. He is in good health and and spirits and he will miss his comrades at RRAA.

Right now, Russell is in an assisted living facility right across from Intel on Sara Road. He can have visitors anytime. You do not need to make any arrangements...just show up. The address is 1504 37th Street SE and the phone number is 994-0350. The name of the facility is Genney's Senior Care, but the name is not on the house anywhere. To get there, go west on Sara rd. off of 528 for two blocks. At the Catholic church, turn left on 37th street. The house is the second one on the left.

I hope some of you find the time to stop by and say goodbye to Russell. He will be thrilled to see you and let me tell you, there will be no lack of conversation! He is still as sharp as a tack!

August Speaker: Fred Miller

Fred Miller is a member of the Portrait Society of America, Plein Air Painters of NM, the Rio Grande Art Association, and a signature member and past President of the Pastel Society of New Mexico. His work has been published in the Pastel Journal, featured in Plein air New Mexico (a book showcasing a number of the States top plein air painters), and collected internationally. His art has garnered numerous awards in national shows and he teaches portrait painting in oils and pastels. Fred's paintings can be seen at Yucca Gallery in Old Town.

Fred will demo at our next membership meeting on August 8th. The meeting starts at 6:30pm. It will be held at Destiny Center in Rio Rancho...4401 Northern Blvd NE. Refreshments will be served. The public is welcome.

Betty Busby is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, where she majored in ceramics. After RISD, she founded a ceramic tile manufacturing studio in Los Angeles, ran it for 18 years, and sold it to move to New Mexico ( her former ceramic shop is still in business today).

Betty has been working full-time making fiber art and teaching since she moved here to New Mexico in 1994.

She has a full exhibition schedule of quilt and fine art shows both in the US and overseas.
Betty also has had several articles published in magazines, and her work is in half a dozen books.

She constantly experiments with new materials and techniques-many of which can be used in mixed media work as well as quilting.

Betty has planned a short slide show for us, and will bring with her a couple of her quilts and talk about samples of mixed media techniques in her work.

In Memory of Delma

June 3rd was the 2nd anniversary of Delma Petrullo's passing. When so much has happened since she left, it seems like it's been such a long time ago.
For many of us, her memory is still alive and well. There are some who are new enough to RRAA that they might not have ever known her. But, I do hope they realize that the legacy of RRAA's Founder is alive and well. And growing.
I was going through some image files of RRAA stuff and ran into an image I didn't know I had. It is one of Delma that I took in October of 2008. I thought I would post it here since it's a very auspicious date (or close enough anyway). It really sums up in one nano second the essence of Delma!

Delma, you are missed dearly, but the memory of you lives strong in many of us!

Volunteer members provided art supplies and a bit of mentoring for any of the youth from the community who wanted to create a work of art to take home.

Imagine my surprise when I was with friend, Donna Barnitz at the opening reception for this amazing fiber arts show at the Capitol Rotunda (Donna has her work in this show too) when Donna pointed out this beautiful piece to me, telling me that it was made by an RRAA member, Betty Busby. I didn't have my camera with me, so I took this on my handy dandy cell phone.

The exhibit, "Timeless New Mexico" is a beautiful exhibit and we have a few artists from Rio Rancho who are in this show besides RRAA member, Betty Busby. If you have never been to the Capitol Rotunda at all, this is a must. First of all, there is the current temporary exhibit of this fiber art show that will be there until August 26th, 2011. You can view the works M-F from 9 a.m.- 6 p.m. Be sure to check before you go that it is not a furlough day (because they just might. For more information, you can go here. In addition to this exhibit is three to four floors of the NM Public Art collection. Well, not all of what they own is on display, but it is a beautiful and extensive collection. Best part? Admission is free. I noticed that many artists donated their work to the collection.

I know that many of our RRAA members are participating in shows that should be mentioned here on this blog. Ricardo Demonstrates His Curvisimo Technique

At the monthly Rio Rancho Art Association meetings, there is a program presentation that follows the business portion of the meeting. The programs usually consists of an artist demonstration or an art related topic by way of a forum, lecture or multi media presentation.

At our March membership meeting, artist, Ricardo Chavez-Mendez demonstrated his 'curvisimo' technique. He normally demonstrates on canvas, but at this particular demonstration, the canvas got left behind somehow, so he created for us a rare and unique piece of his art on cardboard. Improvisation often makes for something unexpected!

Susan Klebanoff, weaver, will be our speaker at the next meeting of the Rio Rancho Art Association. She will speak to us about the process of acquiring placement for art in corporate buildings. Ms. Klebanoff will include a showing of her latest DVD of her many beautiful sculptures throughout the world.
A graduate of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA, she has exhibited extensively worldwide in many public collections and exhibitions. Her art has graced the lobbies of some of the largest corporations and government buildings.
The meeting will be held at Destiny Center, 4401 Northern Blvd. NE, Rio Rancho, NM, on Monday, April 11th at 6:30pm. There will be a short business meeting with Ms. Klebanoff's presentation immediately following. Ricardo Chavez-Mendez will demo for us at the March meeting

Our March program will be a demonstration of the wonderful technique known as "Curvismo", created by New Mexico artist Ricardo Chavez-Mendez...also known as the Dali of the Desert. He is a prolific artist who decided at the age of 14 to dedicate his entire life to a career in art. Ricardo has worked tenaciously toward the goal for the last 40 years, developing into the Master of Curvismo and one of the finest artists in his genre.
Ricardo is truly an extraordinary artist. He is not only the master artist of the style he introduced to New Mexico known as "Curvisimo" or curvism but of technique, color and composition, leaving a trail of awe inspiring art for the art lover, collector and critic alike. The range of mediums is just as impressive, working in acrylics, oils, alkyds, color pencil, watercolor, pastel, fiber art and mixed media, including clay sculpture. He is co-owner of ORO Fine Art GAllery, the hidden treasure of Albuquerque, New Mexico where he teaches privately as well as group instruction.

18 Days A Fine Arts Exhibition & Performing Arts Event

One of my images, Previously Pedaled, has been accepted into the 18 Days show at the Center for Contemporary Arts, Muñoz Waxman Gallery in Santa Fe. This show, open only to full time female residents of New Mexico had over 400 arts competing for space in the event.

The opening reception is Friday night, February 11, 2011 at the gallery -- 1050 Old Pecos Trail, Santa Fe. The museum is located just down the hill behind the Children's Museum and the Armory for the arts. More information can be found at http://www.ccasantafe.org/.

Delma's Work On Exhibit

Up until a few months ago, one could see Delma's work over at Joe's Pasta House-although there are still a few of her pieces on display there, it made me sad to think that there was no where else in Rio Rancho where you could see her work. So, I asked her husband, Robert Petrullo if I could exhibit some of her work over at the Inn at Rio Rancho for the month of January. He graciously agreed and together along with Jackie Duran's help, we hung her work. It be will up throughout the month of January-you can stop by to see it any time since the Inn is open 24/7.

About the Artist

Delma M. Petrullo was not only a City Councilor for District 3 here in Rio Rancho, she was an activist for the visual arts in the city of Rio Rancho. She was the founder and past president for the Rio Rancho Art Association. Delma passed away on June 3rd, 2009 after loosing a 15 month battle with cancer.

She had been a professional artist since 1975; a multi-award winning oil painter originally from New York where she sold and exhibited in galleries and shows throughout the metropolitan area. Delma had considered her artistic style to be representational or a “transcendent realistic” style. She was an exceptional colorist and used a unique conceptual approach to her work that captured the inner essence of the subject matter.

Delma wanted to capture what she saw and sensed in nature in such a way that viewers of her art would want to become participants, having found a place in time where they would like to linger. By remaining true to the scene or subject before her, she created an overall design of connecting shapes and colors that evoke a feeling of grace and power. The vistas she depicted evoke nature’s drama and caprice. She hoped that those who would view her work could observe and appreciate nature, using her interpretations as a guide, but most of all, simply derive enjoyment from her work.

This collection of paintings span a good part of her painting career-from earlier works done while still living in New York, to work completed within a year of her passing away.

Rio Rancho Art Association's Art Rageous Event

Rio Rancho Art Association tried something new this year instead of doing the annual studio tour. Why the change? Many reasons. Geographically, our city is too large for folks to visit more than 2-3 studios easily. Because we are so spread out, visitors tend to go to studios in proximity of each other, leaving the others who are further away with very few visitors. And, logistically the resources required (putting all the directional signs out all over the place, distribution of maps, etc.) are more than what we have. Hence, trying something new: all the artists under one roof.
It was named, "Art Rageous" and was held on a lovely September weekend at the Inn at Rio Rancho. Personally, I think it was a success! I loved the intimate atmosphere of the venue. I find events such as the Rio Grande Arts and Crafts event to be too crowded, too overwhelming and too expensive. Not to mention, exhausting to find parking , get in line, battle the crowds, etc. And, there are way too many vendors at events like that. I go into input overload within 40 minutes of getting there.
Art Rageous seems to be a good fit (and I hope we stick with it).
I compiled a video so that folks who didn't make it over to it could get a sense of what the venue was like. Enjoy!

A DIY (do it yourself) Website(s) to Consider

Although I've yet to create my own website, I've spent the last few years looking at the myriad of possibilities in which to do this. Through that process, I've looked at and tried out a handful of do-it-yourself websites (you create your web pages by using templates). Many of them had learning curves that I cared not to endure since the end result wasn't what I was looking for.
Nina Baldwin has created her website by way on one of these many DIY websites. Her website is beautifully constructed and she did it all herself. She created her site with a company called: Fine Art Studio Online (FASO). Most of these companies offer a free 60 day trial so you can go and play around with it before committing to a contract. If you Google Nina's name, her website will come up first on the list. Thumb's up to Nina on her choice of website companies. The best part is, she can do all her updating herself, so she is in total control of her website. You can check out the pricing structure by clicking on the link provided for FASO.

But, that wasn't a good fit for me. I needed a company that offered the similar benefits AND unlimited images for the same kind of fee structure. Something that I have to take into consideration since I work in multiple mediums. I found everything that I would need in a company called, Art Span. A visitor to your site can even order prints of your images (especially good for photography or they could be giclees of your work as an open edition). Art Span goes beyond being a DIY website and offers many services. Here's an overview of what they offer:

So, maybe this sounds like a commercial, but it's not (I'm not getting paid or any kickbacks for this). But, here are two really good companies to consider and both are affordable. See which one fits your needs.

An ART-Rageous Success!

Well, maybe not in sales exactly, but we had a great time!! In spite of reduced set-up time the artists were able to erect and beautify their booths in record time.

The reception was well-attended and the food ran out (boohoo), but the music by Tony Russell was good and the Raffle for St. Felix Pantry was a big winner. We raised $305 for them and had 14 entries.

We had the Kinkaids and Bear Martinez playing for us on Saturday and Tony Russell came and closed the show on Sunday afternoon.

This was the biggest thing I have ever been involved with and it took magnanimous amounts of praying to get me through. However, the team was fantastic! Kudos to our chief, Carol Sanna, who kept us on target and so much thanks goes to Naomi Hanauer who was our graphic artist designing the brochure, postcards, and signs. Wendell Unzicker did a splendid job with the advertising and Bob Crowley worked and worked to get the room and artists synchronized so we all fit. The effect was amazing!

The volunteers who sat the RRAA booth were both entertaining and knowledgeable about RRAA. They all encouraged the visitors to buy raffle tickets and point them to specific artists that they wanted to see.

Thank You's go to the Greengards who provided the sweet grapes from their vines for all to enjoy!

Carol Sanna brought her really cool camera to show customers and I have to say I was really impressed with how it works. Naomi Hanauer set up her paints and worked on a piece that she has going and Cristina Diaz-Arntzen did a punch-quilt and finished it over the course of the show.

Customers who came through were surprised at the quality of art in Rio Rancho. Few of them even heard of us unless they were friends of the artists. So we had a whole lot of exposure and even picked up about 5 new members.

We loved Sister Claire and Marge who kept the St Felix booth for us. It was great to meet people from the Pantry where we love to donate both food and money. Annette Kornbrekke, our beloved president, organized the raffle for us and she did a wonderful job and took a huge burden off our shoulders. She came back to us just in time to go to work!!!

Carmen Taylor did a great job on compiling the exit surveys. It sounds like the artists had a great time too!

RIO RANCHO, N.M. - The city of Rio Rancho is seeking applications to fill a vacancy on the citys Arts Commission.

Those interested must be a resident of either City Council district 2, 3, 5, or 6. Each applicant must have knowledge and experience in an art-related discipline.

Those interested in serving on the commission must submit an application and résumé to the Office of the City Clerk by 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 8, 2010.

Applications can be obtained from the clerks office located at Rio Rancho City Hall, or by visiting the city online, http://www.ci.rio-rancho.nm.us/artscommission .

The Arts Commission serves in an advisory capacity to the Rio Rancho Governing Body, and works to enhance and promote the arts within the city.

John Curran Hand Woven Rugs on Exhibit at Ghost Ranch and Piedra de Lumbre in Abiquiu

John Curran (aka JD) is a pretty humble man. And, hardworking. Not only that, but his weavings are in demand; particularly in Northern New Mexico which is known internationally for the community of weavers there.

Pictured here are a couple of hand woven table runners from JD's exhibits at Ghost Ranch and Piedra de Lumbre in Abiquiu. These runners are done in the Old Colonial Overshot Style. This is done in South Western colors with wool hand dyed in New Mexico by a friend of the Currans who lives in Santa Fe.

Pictured above are a couple of the new rugs woven on the new Collingwood Loom purchased during Convergence 2010 show held in Albuquerque. These looms are famous and much sought after by weavers. They are manufactured here in the USA by Harrisville Looms and are an amazing piece of ingenuity and engineering. They are unique in that they enable the weaver to keep the tension even throughout weaving and can change the designs also by using the same warp. The warp is linen and the weft pure New Zealand wool. The design in blue and white is an original and new design by John. The blue and white design is also reversible; in other words, the underside of the rug is a complete design so that the rug can be used/displayed on either side.

The wool is hand dyed by a fellow weaver in Santa Fe. What you see here is a work in progress on John's new Loom. The colors are spectacular. Very South Western. Looking forward to seeing the finished product!

Relay for Life Rio Rancho 2010

The 2010 Relay for Life held in Rio Rancho was dedicated to the memory of Delma M. Petrullo who was a city councilor to District 3 and the founder of the Rio Rancho Art Association (aka RRAA).

RRAA members, Sharon Patrick and Paula Scott participated in the Relay for Life. Many thanks to those who donated to the team for this fund raiser.

What is the Relay for Life?

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length.

Relay began in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon in Tacoma, Washington, ran and walked around a track for 24 hours to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Since then, Relay has grown from a single man’s passion to fight cancer into the world’s largest movement to end the disease. Each year, more than 3.5 million people in 5,000 communities in the United States, along with additional communities in 20 other countries, gather to take part in this global phenomenon and raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer.

We can only hope that you will join us next year in 2011 in some way in this remarkable event!

A native of Albuquerque and a long-time supporter of the arts, Regina managed the Arts Program of the Albuquerque International Sunport for seven years, then transferred to the City of Albuquerque Economic Development Department where she focused on arts and cultural economic development and small business incentives. In 2007, she formed her consultance, Cultural Econ, planning cultural tourism and economic strategies for communities. She recently accepted the position of Executive Director of the newly transformed Creative Albuquerque, a non-profit whose mission is to grow the creative economy through education, information, advocacy and leadership.

As a service to the creative community, Creative Albuquerque offers creative classified listings. Wendell Unzicker has been interested in science, visual arts & theater his whole life. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree, worked for a theater co. designing sets, worked for a couple of corporate giants over many years and has been a consultant to other businesses.

Starting as a hobby, Wendell's colored pencil work has burgeoned into a respectable business as he is widely recognized as one of the leading artists in this medium in the country. His work has been featured in competitions and galleries nationwide. He is a signature member of the Colored Pencil Society of America as well as numerous other professional associations.

Wendell's commercial work includes over 250 book covers, magazine illustrations, posters and logo designs, as well as technical drawings for NASA. He is co-owner of the Wooden Cow Gallery located in Albuquerque.

Wendell will be speaking at the next membership meeting on Monday, Aug. 2nd.

I found out yesterday that I had two pieces of work sell at the Kirtland AFB art gallery, when I got a check in the mail from the curators there. Those are my first sales of framed work. They were photos of the Cumbres Toltec Scienic Railroad. I was pretty excited about that.

Friends,
As most of you know, Cecelia and Jim McRoberts' son, Thomas James Francis "TJ" McRoberts, passed away about a week ago...Sunday, June 13, 2010. TJ was a member of the Air Force.

Cecelia asked me to let you know that a funeral will be held this Friday, June 25th, 2010, at 11am at Calvary Lutheran Church here in Rio Rancho. The address is 305 Unser Blvd., at the corner of Abrazzo and Unser. Abrazzo is about 3/4 mile south of Northern Blvd. Light refreshments will be served at a reception at the church afterwards. All are welcome.

Following the funeral and reception, family and friends will proceed to the Santa Fe National Cemetery for interment.

Plein Air at the Bio Park National Garden Day

National Public Gardens Day is for everyone who loves nature; especially artists. The Albuquerque Bio Park Botanic Garden marked the day with a special celebration that included demonstrations, talks and lectures.The Rio Rancho Art Association helped with this celebration by showing up with their easels and paints-eager to capture the beauty before them in this spectacular garden.

May Program Presentation: Donna Barnitz

Donna Barnitz had been dyeing and painting one of a kind fabrics for 15 years. She has pursued a variety of fabric altering techniques including batik, silk screening, and embellishing cotton, rayon and silk. She also produces a limited number of indigo and rust infused cloth.

This past year Donna was Artist-in-Residence at Petrified Forest National Park where she concentrated on rust dyeing fabrics that imitate the look of petrified logs. In addition to fabric dyeing she enjoys making vivid art quilts from her own fabrics. Her quilt "My Sister's Truck" was recently selected for exhibition in the New Mexico Capitol Rotunda.

Donna's presentation at our May membership meeting will focus on her Artist-in-Residence as well as the process she used of dyeing fabric with rust.

The meeting is held at Destiny Center Church on Northern Blvd. and will begin at 6:30 PM. Admission is free and you need not be a member to attend the program.

There are approximately 19 pieces of original art donated towards the raffle tickets sales by artists of RRAA. The odds of someone going home with a prize from a raffle ticket purchase is quite good! If you see a piece you have to have and would rather not leave it to 'fate', there will be a "buy it now" option. All proceeds from the raffle tickets sales will benefit Haven House. The art raffle will only take place during the reception on May 1st.

*Haven House, Inc. is the only agency in all of Sandoval County that is dedicated to serving domestic violence victims. Haven House provides 24/7 crisis intervention, safety planning, shelter for women and their children, legal advocacy (orders of protection, information about judicial processes, accompaniment to court), individual therapeutic counseling for women and children, support/education groups in the shelter and community, life skills education, children's services, community education and outreach, and a Batterers Intervention Program for men who batter, provided on behalf of the victims.

Haven House's number of clients has grown steadily. This year, Haven House will serve more than 1,000 individuals, many for up to 90 days or more.

Haven House was founded by a small group of community volunteers in 1994 as Project Sandoval County, to provide mainly legal advocacy for domestic violence victims. The shelter facility, located in Rio Rancho, opened in January 2002 and since then, programs and services have expanded.

Rio Rancho High School art teacher, Matthew Lutz worked with his students to participate and submit these designs to the Vans Sneaker Company.

For the past month, 19 of his students custom painted four pairs of Vans shoes for a national design contest. Up to ten schools per state participated. Today, they found out that they made the Top 20. Now, the public will choose four winners from those.

Starting Friday, April 16, go to http://vans.com/customculture/vote.html to cast your vote for Rio Rancho High School in the southwest region. If they are the most popular school in the region, their team gets to fly to LA for a five day trip. If they are selected as the winner from the Final Four, their art department will win $10,000.

The Invisibility Factor

“My goal in life is to be invisible...and I am very good at it” (Princess Mia, “The Princess Diaries”) My favorite movie quote of all time. This is what I have aspired to in my life. But all good things must come to an end. *grin*

Most artists want to be known to art patrons around the world. They work hard and market themselves and they join associations and groups, and take classes and get degrees, and teach and...well, you get the picture. They want to be “known”.

Me, not so much. I have lived my life to be invisible to the outside world. Marketing myself has come really hard, because of this attitude.

I love making art, and sometimes what I do astounds me because I don’t get tired of looking at it. When I get tired of looking at a piece of art it makes me want to toss it out or put it in a yard sale. Or just gesso over it and do something else.

I have more art in my head than I have produced. Often, I lie awake at night and piece together the parts that I know I have stored. And on waking up and sorting through the parts I am always surprised by something I’ve forgotten I have. It’s an adventure. My tag line is “Where every day meets surprise”.

But the putting myself “out there” is the hardest part. I want people to see my art, but not me. I love when someone sees something I did and gushes over it or stands there with the chin in hand studying it. I like the way they see it.

I am learning that it’s not a bad thing for people to notice me. The artist. The one who comes with the art. It’s all a part of the whole. Acceptance of this fact is slowly (but surely) dawning on my psyche. People will see me.

I find many artists have this problem. It’s not just me. Rio Rancho Art Association and all the people in it have shown me over and over that it’s ok to be noticed. Thanks for that.

Begun in the Spring of 2007, we (Betsy Greenlee, Fred Yost, Jaci Fischer, Leila Hall, Elaine Scott, Jeff Potter and in 2008 Rod Groves joined) were inspired by previous artist/ writer collaborations, most notably the "Scribes Eight" and strive to explore artistic genres we generally have not thought about attempting. Abstract art came to mind and we chose to meet every six weeks and share our individual efforts at "making" abstract art from a commonly agreed "project" scope discussed at the previous meeting.

Those discouraging periods when nothing works and you wonder why you didn’t take your father’s advice and go to law school. Our group was brought together by a mutual acknowledgment of this debilitating feeling. As we discussed possible solutions to the burnout problem, we discovered that we also shared an interest in exploring ways to push
ourselves beyond our usual representational work toward greater abstraction. We decided
to meet every six weeks to share the outcome of our independent efforts on an agreed-
upon project and to decide what the next project will be.
In the beginning we had no intention of exhibiting this work publicly, but we have found our collaboration so productive and rewarding that we decided other artists might enjoy seeing the results of our efforts. This is intended to show examples of each person’s interpretation of various projects as we continue to expand our creative boundaries.

I practically grew up in Red River, NM, and my grandfather was the pharmacist in Taos in the early 1900's when the Taos Society of artists was forming. I have a cousin who was one of the casualties from Taos in the Bataan Death March. So, you see, that even though I moved here from Texas, I have a lot of Northern New Mexico in my history.

Just a short note. I was contacted a couple of weeks ago by "Trains" magazine about a photography that I took of the Santa Fe Southern Railway (SFS) on New Year's Eve with the blue moon in the background. The pub is doing a feature on that particular railroad and wanted my photography for consideration for the July issue of Trains. They will pay a one time useage fee and give a credit line to me. Hopefully it doesn't wind up on the cutting room floor. This will be my first "published" work if it makes the cut.

Art at the Hewlett Packard Rio Rancho Facility

Hewlett Packard (HP) opened its doors to the public on Feb. 9th, 2010 to allow the community a chance to get a glimpse of what the facility looks like on the inside. Normally, this is a secured building where the public cannot come and go at will.

Gracing the walls of the reception area and a conference room is art from the artists of the Rio Rancho Art Association. The art will be on exhibit there until May.

Lose your Mind

About two months ago I ran across a doodling technique that I thought seemed just like the kind of art exercise that would suit me. Called "Zentangles" or "Zen Doodling", it is a meditative technique that will help you let go of your mind and overthinking a project and take you away for a few minutes or more. I became immediately addicted.

As I understand it, Zentangles is doodling with repetitive patterns, geometric shapes and lines. You start with a piece of paper. I use bristol board because it has some heft and if I happen to make something I like, it's not on scrap paper. I cut the paper to about a 3-inch square. Put a light pencil dot about 1/16 of an inch from the edge on each corner of the paper. With your pencil, draw lines connecting the dots so you have a frame. Inside the frame you will do your drawing. Imagine holding a piece of thread and letting it fall on the paper. Draw this imaginary line within the frame. This will be the last you use your pencil. Oh, and no erasing. Some of the fun of this technique is that you don't plan anything, just let it evolve.

Take a Micron 0.1 or 0.05 black pen and start doodling from the line you've made so that shapes and designs are created within the entire frame of the paper.

The above image shows the original loopy line and what I doodled. You can embellish as much or as little as you like. It's perfect for doing while the TV is on or if you have a bit of time and you don't have all your supplies handy since pen and paper is all you need.

Monthly meetings consist of a brief business meeting, followed by a speaker or demonstration. There is also a reception with opportunities for members to sign up for art venues, exhibitions, and volunteering. Art by members is usually available for viewing at the meeting.

Ello, ello, ello. Well, New Year's Eve I was fortunate enough to be coming out of Los Alamos at just the right time. I hit the scenic overlook just before the Blue Moon crested the eastern horizon. got some killer pics of it. But later that night as I was going through Santa Fe, I stopped at the train station just to see what was up. I honestly didn't expect to see anything since it was a holiday, but to my surprise the Rail Runner and the Santa Fe Southern were both very active. I got a killer shot of the Santa Fe Southern, readying itself in the yard for an evening run. The picture I captured of the train also had the blue moon in the sky over it. It was terrific. Couple day later I showed the photo to the General Manager of the railroad and she LOVED it. She said she was going to "present" it to the Board of Directors. What becomes of it after that we will have to wait and see. But I was very proud of it.

Obviously, as most of you know, trains are one of my many photographic passions, so along with that I have been submitting several photos that have been accepted for display on the website, http://www.railpictures.net/. This is quite the accomplishment for me as their requirements and accpetance criteria are very stringent and for quite some time, was impossible for me to get anything submitted. I am up to 9 accepted submissions thus far and counting.

I also did a CD cover for a Christian Rock band a few months ago and it is finally being released this month, along with my credits listed inside for the photographic work.

That is what is going on in my world. Just thought I drop a line.

Nina Baldwin will be the featured artist in a solo show at KISS Cafe. The show is in conjunction with the annual big kickoff of the Christmas season, the Holiday Stroll, in Old Town, Albuquerque. The show will take place the weekend of Dec. 4th, 5th and 6th. Come meet the artist on Friday, December 4th at a reception from 5pm to 7pm. KISS Cafe is located in Old Town at 404 San Felipe St. on beautiful Patio Escondido.

Priscilla and I got home late last week from our fall trip to Maryland. We managed to beat the storms on our return. We've driven by the Pig Out Place several times in our I-40 travels and have found the signs intriguing. We haven't got up the nerve to eat there yet but maybe someday. Online it is rated 4.5 stars out of 5. If you interested it is located midway between Oklahoma City and Fort Smith Ark.

Rio Rancho's first all-fiber arts show, featuring several of New Mexico's outstanding
hand weavers with national and international reputations opens Friday, Dec. 4,
with a reception from 6-8 p.m. at the gallery of the Inn at Rio Rancho and Conference Center.
Co-curators of the show, entitled “Unbroken Journey, A New Mexico Fiber
Arts Collection,” are Rio Rancho weaver and Rio Rancho Art Association member,
John Curran along with Espanola rag rug weaver Sandy Voss.

“Since this is the first such exhibit in Rio Rancho we wanted to showcase examples of the diverse weaving styles for which New Mexico is famous along with some of the contemporary work flourishing here, “ said Curran. “It simply wasn’t possible to show examples of every weaving style in New Mexico, so we settled on a collection of styles which we reflect in the invitational show’s title.”

Among the weavers taking part in the show, are Nancy Kozikowski and Susan Klebanoff, both tapestry artists with work in collections around the world. Also participating is Lisa Trujillo, owner with her husband, Irvin, of Centinela Traditional Arts Gallery
in Chimayo specializing in Chimayo and Rio Grande weaving styles, Donna Contractor, Pat Dozier, Connie Enzman-Forneris and Letitia Roller.

Mixed Media and Me

I've been working in various art forms for years, and I have been involved in Mixed Media work for the last ten years or so. I think one of the reasons I like Mixed Media is that it can include anything and everything so if I get bored with one thing, I can change to challenge myself with other materials. Working in Mixed Media lets me explore techniques in painting, sculpting, sewing, and soldering (to name a few), as well as work in paper, fabric, canvas, wood, polymer clay, glass, whatever I can think of. Going to the hardware store, for example, and finding materials to work with in my art turns a boring shopping trip into a creative challenge. Try it some day and you'll find that a bag of nails will never look the same to you!

When I get stuck on one idea and I feel like I can't get beyond a preconceived notion, I can transfer the skills and techniques from one medium to another. One of my favorite expressions is Collage and I have explored Collage techniques with paper, fiber and metal. What makes a composition interesting? What kind of composition moves your eye so the whole piece becomes more than the sum of its parts? How can I use color, form and texture to my advantage in expressing myself and my work? I find the answers to these questions in working with the assets of a certain material as well as its limitations. I also find that answering these questions in one medium can, and does, transfer to other media. So an answer to one may be an answer to all.

An important part of my artwork is playing. I put on good music and lay out some materials and just fool around seeing what materials will do -- when used together, when heated, when covered up and then exposed -- anything that comes into my mind. I have found techniques that have worked for me countless times by this type of directed play. I also find that play lends itself to group endeavors. It can get awfully isolated working by myself all the time so I asked two friends to come over last week. We worked for two afternoons playing around with making little 3-D projects. I put out paints, glitter, rhinestones, paper, small wooden shapes, oil sticks, and pencils. Not only did we have a ball, but we made some pretty fun things. Give three artists the same materials and watch what different art we can come up with! The laughs and camaraderie in working together and watching what each other does makes it fun and inspiring. A technique one uses inspires us all in different ways.

I just finished up showing a class of fifth graders some of my art. I have to say that I am amazed at how well behaved and intelligent they were. They asked some great questions and loved my art. I am deeply humbled by that last fact.

Mersad, the art teacher, was very generous letting me talk for almost an hour about recycling objects and learning to design with them. Her class is going to be making a dragon sculpture for the front of the school out of recycled aluminum cans. She has asked me to help her with this project. I think it will a lot of fun working with these little rapscallions ( that's another word I use like "Yea big" to describe something or someone).

Talking up my art really gave me motivation to finish other projects that I am working toward. I feel energized and excited to get back to creating. I have enough styrofoam to do just about anything I can dream up, and enough molds to make everything I can imagine.

Imagination is a great device for producing something wonderful. Even if it sits inside your head for years and years. You can build it up layer by layer until the finished project is completely imagined, then begin to create it in reality.

Sometimes you will need outside help to finish a project if you don't have all the understanding and tools at hand. I have had to ask others for help with something I want to create so I can make it just the way I see it in my head. There is a lot of trial and error involved in the creating process, but if you try something and it doesn't work, don't throw it out-it may work for something else later.

The biggest problem with recycled art is storage. But thankfully, I have a storage shed out back. I am not worried about anyone stealing my stuff...it's all trash anyway ;o}

This should be the motto of EVERY politician:

"I am not a politician, I'm here to serve my constituents."

It seems that most if not all politicians loose focus of this (if they ever had it to begin with) and end up serving everything else but their constituents. But, not so with Delma Petrullo. She always went around saying that she is a lousy politician because she was here to serve her constituents.

She had the ability too, to make a huge impact on anyone that she crossed paths with. A very unique and special person she was.

This past Sept. 4th, the City of Rio Rancho dedicated and planted a tree in her memory. It was the first kind of tree memorial the city has had (you too can get one for someone for a mere $300.00 which is a lifetime guarantee along with the dedication plaque).

The dedication took place early on a Friday morning on September 4th, 2009.

And many of our city's firemen were there too along with family and friends. Although, I did wonder why there was nary a police officer from the city there. A curious thing indeed.

This past Sept. 24th, she would've been 61 years old/young. She accomplished a lot in so little time. I can't even begin to imagine what she would've accomplished had she stayed around a bit longer...

The Hubbard Museum of the American West, located in Ruidoso Downs, NM has announced that two of my images were accepted for the 18th Annual Fall American Photography Competition and Exhibition. The exhibit is being shown through December 13.

The two images accepted were: "Wilderness Signage" taken at the Ah-shi-sle-pah Wilderness Study Area in Northern New Mexico and "Protection" taken on Johnson Mesa near Raton.

Laverne is now exhibiting some of her work at the Blue Portal Gallery located in Old Town, Albuquerque.

In 2008, The Blue Portal Gallery marked its 30th year of business. It is located on historic Church Street in Old Town, Albuquerque. The shop exclusively sells work by New Mexico Artist and Craft Makers age 55 and older. Members of the Assistance League founded Blue Portal in 1978 to serve the local senior community and tap into the growing art market in the Albuquerque area. This is a non profit organization and is run by volunteers of the Assistance League. Hours are 10:00 to 4:30 Tuesday through Saturday and 1:00 to 4:00 pm on Sundays. The Blue Portal is now showing the art work of Laverne Elliott.

Why Donate Art?

As artists we are regularily asked to donate art, and every artist has to make decisions to donate or not to donate. For me the criteria is simple:
1. If I were wealthy would I donate generously to this cause?
2. If I had the time would I donate 20, 30 or 40 hours to this cause?
If the answer is yes to both then I am happy to donate a painting. If I spent 40 hours stuffing envelopes to help a cause, why not spend those 40 hours painting (lots more fun!!) and then donate the results to the cause? Call me crazy but I think painting is more fun than menial labor, and if my painting can bring them in a fair amount then it is worth more to them than me with the enevelopes.

Once the decision to donate is made -- and I make it purely on the basis of the criteria I have mentioned -- then consider the potential benefits. I say potential because there is no guarantees this will happen, but it is possible your art will advertise itself through your donation. You may gain publicity, recognition or even sales from that donation. So you help a cause you believe in, enjoy the process, and get some possible business help in the process -- what could be better?

Annual New Mexico Photographers Art Show

Hi, some of the individuals from the Enchanted Lens Camera club have band together with Expo New Mexico to have a photographers only juried show Dec 3 - 23. The juried show will accept entries on Sept 1 - Spet 30. For full information please read the information attached.

Rules for Entry

Mission: The Annual New Mexico Photographic Art Show was created in order to provide an opportunity for the photographers of New Mexico to share, display and sell their images in a premier gallery setting that showcases local artists. The goal in this undertaking is to encourage statewide support of photographic artists and the activities and education of photography. ANMPAS will promote events that will feature the best photographic images from the best New Mexico photographers.

Who is Eligible: The show is open to all photographers who are currently residents of the State of New Mexico.

The 2009 Exhibit: This exhibit will be held at the New Mexico Expo from December 3rd to December 23rd. The exhibit is free and open to the general public. It will be comprised of the best images, according to the jury, from the entries. All selected prints will be prominently and elegantly displayed at the Fine Arts building. An opening reception will be held for all exhibitors and invited guests. This show will be advertised in the print media as well as radio and television.

Invitational Rules:

§ All photographic processes and formats are eligible
§ All prints selected for the show must be priced and for sale
§ All sales proceeds will be split 70% to photographer and 30% to ANMPAS.
§ All prints selected for the show must be matted and framed in compliance with the show’s size and gallery presentation requirements
§ Each photographer will be allowed to enter a maximum of 3 prints
§ Entry fees will be $10.00 per print entered for jurying

2009 Categories for entry: Photographers will enter their prints in the following categories. Prints in these categories will be judged for awards. The judges reserve the right to move prints from one category to another based on appropriateness.

§ Portrait
§ Scenic
§ Floral and Botanical
§ Panorama
§ Still Life
§ Wildlife
§ Miscellaneous

How to Enter: Images produced in all formats and types, including digital media, are eligible. Entries may be submitted in one of the following ways:
1. By email to the following address: ANMPASentry@comcast.net in digital form. Images submitted will be uploaded along with an entry form to be completed and attached to the email with the entered images. Entry fees may be paid at the following PayPal address: ANMPAS@paypal.com or by sending a check or money order made payable to ANMPAS to: ANMPAS Entry, 158 Tierra Encantada, Corrales, NM 87048.

2. Entries may also be submitted by printing the form, sending it with your images on a CD, and including a check made payable to ANMPAS. The address for submission is ANMPAS Entry, 158 Tierra Encantada, Corrales, NM 87048. Please include your name on the CD.

The submission period will be from September 1st to October 1st. Entries received after October 1st will be disqualified.

Print files will be no larger than 2.5 megapixels, in JPG format, saved at maximum quality, with the longest dimension no larger than 1024 pixels, at a resolution of 72 dpi, in sRGB color space.
Files will be named as follows:
Lastname_firstname_image1.jpg, with no spaces in filename. If you are entering multiple entries, each should be assigned a number of image1, image2, and image3.
Example: Perea_LeRoy_image2.jpg
No borders, embedded marks or logos should be used with the digital files.

All files will be destroyed at the conclusion of the show.

All entries will be reviewed by a panel of professional photographers. This panel will select the best eligible images to be shown at the 1st Annual New Mexico Photo Art Show. The exhibit will be shown at the Fine Arts building at the New Mexico Expo from December 5th to December 23rd.

The judging panel will award a 1st place winner in each category. A Best of Show award will be determined from those winners.

Submission of selected images: Photographers will be notified of their selection into the show by Oct. 15th. Upon notification, selected photographers will be responsible for submitting a high quality print that has been matted and framed. All prints should adhere to gallery style matting and framing. Mattes should be white, gray, or black, and all prints must be framed using glass or Plexiglas in a simple black metal or wood frame. The printed image should be a minimum size of 11 X 14 inches. The maximum image size should not exceed 20 X 24 inches. The minimum size of your framed photograph should be 15 X 19 inches. The maximum size of the framed print should not exceed 26 x 30 inches. Panoramic or odd sized images should be 150 square inches not to exceed 480 square inches. Prints not meeting these standards will be disqualified. All prints should include a title of no more than 10 words. Additional information on preparing your prints for the exhibition will be available at www.ANMPAS.com.

(Here's what Gordon wrote to me when he sent me these images) "Last Saturday night we had the biggest electrical storm in a couple of years. The good news is it was a ways off and I was able to stand out on the front porch and take some pictures. The bad news was it had been so long since I tried to photograph lighting I had forgotten how I had set up the camera before. Before the stormed passed I started to get the hang of it."

All I can say is that it is a heck of a lot better than I would've been able to muster! Thanks, Gordon!

You Can Make A Difference

By Getting Involved

Today makes it one month since Delma passed away. If you are new to this organization, then perhaps you did not get a chance to know what a remarkable person Delma was. For those of us who have been here for a few years, we know that we have all been affected in positive ways. I can't even begin to do her justice! I think, though, if you were to Google her name, it might give you a good glimmer that she was a force to be reckoned with. And that she had laid the groundwork for many good causes. We are all the fortunate recipients of that work.

Not only are we the recipients, but we can all choose to become the ones who will continue what she has started and see to it that the legacy she left us is carried on. It's always better to be a part of the solution instead of a critic to the problems. I do hope that you make an active choice to get involved. It is your community; much can be gained by your investing into it.We all know that "many hands make the work light".

I will end here with an image of a jar of paintbrushes from Delma's studio. These were the ones that she used for "texture". There are a variety of brushes in this jar. Some can make a lot of marks in one stroke, some make very tiny, detailed marks.One brush has only four hairs on it! The point is, this is who we are as a collective group. Some of us are able to make those broad strokes, and some of us do the fine, small strokes. All are important in painting that big picture. You don't have to be the one who does the broad strokes. Your contribution is needed and valued whether it is a broad, medium or detailed stroke. It all contributes in creating that big picture!

I can't tell you how much it means to him to read how his wife has affected so many people. Did you know that most of our National Parks have an "Artist In Residence" program? Each park has different stipulations as to what it entails, but all you need do is to type in a search for your favorite National Park and look for the program within their site. Even if there is none listed on the website, you might want to contact the park directly since information posted to these sites rarely happens in real time.
